Collecting wine should involve you experimenting with a variety of wines.
Many liquor stores / wine stores and pretty much any winery have tasting available to some extent. Don't be bashful about tasking.... that's what it's there for!
You will likely find that there is some expensive wine you enjoy, as well as some cheaper wines that are just as wonderful.
Good starter brands, if you want to just taste on your own at home, include Barefoot, Beringer, and Bolla. They are relatively inexpensive and give a good idea of what to expect in your typical wines, and you can easily expand from there. If you find a bottle you don't care for, just use it for cooking & marinating.
References :
My norm is Chardonay, but I went to a winery in Chandler, AZ for a wine tasting celebration a few months ago and had the best red wine called Sweet Lucy. You can find it at Cost Plus World Market. It's awesome!
References :
As far as 'collecting' wine - try and go for the reds. The whites don't last long and are better when you buy them to be drunk straight away. Merlots are lovely and easy to drink and keep for a while. I am currently a fan of rose's but they are a bit like whites and won't last too long. Why not go to some wineries and do some wine tasting and talk to the makers to see what they recommend?
